Cap hit is the amount the player counts for against the NHL per team salary cap. This number is
determined by dividing the total amount a contract is for by the length of the deal. This average salary is what
counts against the salary cap, not the player's salary. For instance assume a player receives a 3 year contract for
$6 million. In the first year the player earns $1.5 million, the second $2.5 million and the third $2 million.
The player's cap hit per season would be $2 million each season.
NHL Salary Cap in 2007-8 was $50.3 million, teams must spend at least $34.3 million.
NHL Salary Cap in 2008-9 is $56.7 million ($17 million
more than 2005-6), teams must spend at least $40.7 million.
Maximum single player salary is $11.34 million
